Summer’s Song
It’s calling - do you hear it? Waves, seagulls, soft breezes, distant laughter, maybe even the faintest sound of an ice cream truck playing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on repeat. It’s summer’s song - those sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and feelings that strike a chord within us reminding us of the very best of summer seasons gone by.
Memorial Day weekend tends to be the bell that unofficially rings the summer season in. Technically we have a few more weeks of spring but once school is out, graduations have commenced, and a long holiday weekend is in the books, summer has begun! We look forward to warm weather, beach or pool time, road trips, vacations and getaways, farmer’s markets, ice cream cones, and a slightly slower pace of life. It’s also usually a hot time of year in most places and whether you like the sweltering heat or you don’t (I do not), the sun and all its beauty invite us outdoors to linger a bit in its light and all its sunny effects. Even if we don’t look forward to the heat, we all do tend to look forward to that lingering and light-filled change of pace and rhythm of life.
Seasons are for that though - embracing change, stepping into new, and enjoying the best of what the season has to offer. It’s the most complex thing to explain but the simplest and most beautiful to behold. Each year we anticipate the change and find ourselves ready for it reminiscing on good times spent in past seasons and hoping they will return again in this season. I am not particularly fond of summer as I am not particularly fond of the heat. However, year after year, ironically I find myself ready for the change when it finally approaches and then also find myself looking forward to all those sights, sounds, smells, flavors, and moments that are reminiscent and so specifically and beautifully summer!
May your summer song this year be sweet - and cool!
Michele
